Project Burns
In 2012 Awaken Africa will launch an approved study in the Burns Unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) where approximately 1000 acute patients are admitted annually. In South Africa, thermal injury is the major cause of unnatural death in children under the age of 4 years. Medical advances over the past 2 decades have contributed to improved medical outcomes of burn injuries, however the time has come to optimize the healing of pediatric burn survivors by offering psychosocial and emotional support as well.

Our goal is to measure the need and create a strong case for psychosocial services as they relate to the child survivor, family, and reintegration into the community. Outcomes from Project Burns will be evaluated for the purposes of program development and sustainability.
