Awaken Africa is dedicated to supporting the emotional and psychological healing of children and families from underserved South African communities. We do this by offering services that address trauma resulting from low socioeconomic circumstances, violence and life threatening health conditions.
We believe a solid foundation of mental health and psychosocial care for children and families supports leadership development. Most importantly, we believe every child deserves a bright future.
Philosophy
Awaken Africa is a non-profit organization based on a proficiency model that emphasizes building upon the strengths and resiliency of the child, family, and community.
|
We hold firmly to the inherent wisdom that exists within each of us collectively and cross-culturally. Therefore, the role of the therapist is to work alongside community members as facilitators rather than foreign informants. Regardless of one’s country of origin or belief system, we believe that the experience of one’s own reflection in another is essential to understanding our interconnectedness, developing compassion, and embracing our humanity. |
GOALS:
- SERVICE DELIVERY: We are dedicated to providing South African communities with
quality child and family counseling and early intervention services related to
addressing psychological trauma.
- EDUCATION: We provide training in social-emotional and behavioral practices that
are universal and facilitate healthy psychosocial development. These services are offered to caregivers, family members, healthcare personnel, teachers and anyone who has a role in the lives of young children who have experienced trauma.
- TRAINING CENTER: We create opportunities for interns, graduate students and
post-graduate mental health professionals to receive quality, intensive, hands-on counseling training for the purpose of developing skill, cultural competence, and compassion for working with children, families and caregivers who have been exposed to trauma.
