Awaken Africa at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital
The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) is located in Cape Town, South Africa and is the only dedicated children's hospital in sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, RCWMCH serves children and families from local regions, neighboring and distant African countries admitting approximately 250,000 children annually, 95% whom are underserved or indigent. Regarded as South Africa's leading center for post-graduate specialist pediatric medical and surgical training, it is a center of excellence for the training of all categories of child health professionals from around the world. more>>
Creative Arts Therapy and Wellness Program
As a part of the Pain Management team at the RCWMCH, The Creative Arts Therapy and Wellness Program (CATWP) oversees therapeutic interventions designed to complement the medical treatment model and address primary and secondary trauma. Therapy modalities include the use of play, art, music, movement/yoga, visualization, touch and additional clinically effective treatment for trauma to assist children and family members to identify, cope with and integrate stressful experiences triggered or exacerbated by injury and illness. more>>
Project Burns
In 2012 Awaken Africa will launch an approved study in the Burns Unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) where approximately 1000 acute patients are admitted annually. In South Africa, thermal injury is the major cause of unnatural death in children under the age of 4 years. more>>
